Carhartt Celebrates Five Years of Community Creativity at its Detroit Workshop
Workwear brand’s hometown building and gathering space commemorates milestone with new local installations
DEARBORN, Mich., August 27, 2025 – This summer, Carhartt proudly marks the five-year anniversary of its Carhartt Workshop (located at 5800 Cass Avenue), a first-of-its-kind space where creativity meets community, located above its hometown store in Detroit. Designed to give hardworking people the tools, space and expertise they need to bring their ideas to life, the Carhartt Workshop has become a resource for local Michigan communities to get inspired.
Since its launch in 2020, the Carhartt Workshop has:
- Provided 80,000+ free tool loans to 3,400+ local community members;
- Housed an inventory of 1,600 tools, with the list growing each month;
- Hosted 200+ free workshops and resource fairs on skills including 3-D printing, bicycle maintenance, building garden beds and more;
- Offered free space for 3,000 hours of community gatherings and collaborations; and
- Evolved into a hub for connection, skill-building, and hands-on creativity.
“The Carhartt Workshop is more than just a lending library for tools, it’s a place where neighbors come together to get things done,” said Todd Corley, Chief People & Impact Officer at Carhartt. “As we celebrate the positive impact that the Carhartt Workshop has brought to Detroit over the past five years, we’re reminded of the magic that happens when we roll up our sleeves to connect, create and build together.”
To celebrate the milestone, community members can visit three new creative installations at the Carhartt Workshop:
- Buffalo Soldiers Sculpture: In partnership with local artist Olivia Guterson, Carhartt commissioned a life-size resin horse sculpture honoring Detroit’s historic Buffalo Soldiers. This tribute highlights the Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Association (BHSA) and its work introducing local youth to horses and history in Rouge Park. The sculpture commemorates Carhartt’s donations for facility enhancements, most recently to construct a new pole barn. The statue, currently featured at the Carhartt Workshop, will be donated to BSHA at a later date.
- Keep Growing Detroit Native Bee Hotel: To support preservation of Michigan’s more than 450 species of native bees, the Carhartt Workshop designed, constructed and donated a custom bee hotel to the Keep Growing Detroit (KGD) Farm. Carhartt supported KGD in securing the land that now houses the bee hotel, offering nesting space and educational resources on the vital role of native pollinators. A replica is on display at the Carhartt Workshop, where community members can learn how to construct one of their own.
- Belle Isle Conservancy Photo Experience: A vibrant photo installation was unveiled at the Carhartt Workshop, designed to educate visitors about Carhartt’s support of the Belle Isle Shop, an on-island retail operation run by Belle Isle Conservancy, the park’s nonprofit partner and operator of the Belle Isle Aquarium. Following the anniversary celebration, the installation will be donated to the Conservancy for continued public enjoyment.
