I bought the largest size, as I wanted a hat I could fold earflaps down, for our cold windy northern WA winters. This hat does the trick, although as some reviewers have noted, it's a little snug. I normally wear a 7.5 size hat. On the plus side, the earflaps stay down and don't blow around, like some of my other name brand caps. I bought one for the wife who rides a horse in a cold breezy arena, and she said hers works very well also. Hard to go wrong on sturdy Carhartt products!
I asked my wife to get me a new Carhartt "ear flap" hat for Christmas. She bought my first ear flap hat 3 years ago. She returned to the same store and purchased this current model. I'm sorry but this hat is nothing but chinsy. My old hat was made of a quilted fabric both inside and outside, very sturdy. The only reason I was going to replace it was because it had faded a lot. I am very disappointed with the new hat. The material used to make it is thinner, the bill is stubby, and who folds the ear flaps inside? My old hat's flaps fold on the outside so the hat size remains consistent. As you can guess we will be returning the new hat for a refund. I will continue to use my old faded hat - it may out live me.
I'm a 7 1/4 in hats and this fit perfect if the flaps are tucked in. If they're down, then it's a little looser, but still fits well. It does look a little funny to me because it's not something I typically see anybody wear, but it's still warm which is all that matters.
The absolute best winter hat I’ve ever had. Even beats out my old Scotch cap. My only complaint is they seem to get tight on your head when the flaps are folded up. I don't know who but after wearing it for a while I have to take it off and let my head rest before using it again.
I would FULLY recommend this product IF you'd have the proper sizing. I found one of these caps many years ago (size small) and my husband has worn it out. We have looked all over - any time we are in the area of any Carhart products. Finally, I had the thought to order online to find that there are no small caps even offered anymore. This is the only cap he has found that will do what he needs it to do... warm, wind resistant, comfortable and have a nice look... I ordered the smallest I could but unfortunately, it is was too big on him. I even tried giving it to my dad and my nephews because it is such a nice hat but they don't fit it either. It must be a very large sizing... unfortunately, I need to return it. The sizing is the only beef I have about it. Otherwise, an amazing product.
The cap is the usual excellent Carhartt quality. But the fit is a problem. With earflaps up, it fits fine. With ear flaps down, it's too loose. I guess this would be a problem with any hat that has the ear flaps on the inside. Next time I'd go with a hat with the flaps on the outside.
Just get it. Comfortable. Warm. Wind-resistant. And with the secret weapon earflaps deployed, great for pretty much any winter activity. Plenty water resistant for snowblowing, and quite comfortable with the flap up and invisible. I like mine so much that I have given a couple as gifts to other baseball-cap kinda guys.

Warm but not overbearing, just right for some quick work outside, or short commutes, if you plan on being outside all day, a true winter hat would be more suitable choice. Another size choice would also be good, the small/medium was a hit too big for me.
This is probably the best cap I've ever had. Makes me wish winter was already here, and I hate winter. Comfortable, warm, durable, great fit, good-looking. Bought a black one a while ago at a retailer and just ordered an army green one mailorder yesterday. Only improvements I would suggest would be more solid colors, and also a few patterns of camo. One of the few choices for a cap like this, too, and it is pretty well done.
Great fit and stays on with little adjustment, however the brim is a bit crooked. Upon visiting the purchase place at a later time, I found that all the hats had the similar characteristic, just off center brim placement. Other than that, a good cold weather hat.
I have trouble finding hats that fit my head. Even for big-headed guys like myself, this cap fits very well and is very comfortable to wear. The insulation in the cap and the ear flaps really help to keep out the cold. This item is a necessity if you work outside during those frigid winter months!
I purchased this hat for my husband as a gift after he saw it on carhartt.com. We live in Upstate NY and he plows snow during the winter season as a full time job. He loves the versatility of this hat as he wears it as a regular baseball cap on nicer days, then flips the ear flap down when its cold or snowy. He no longer brings two hats to work. Several of his coworkers commented on what a great idea this hat was and how they wanted one just like it. He has worn it over a month now and it still looks like new. It was a good quality purchase that has served him well.
Why doesn't Carhartt make the ear flap winter hat in Blaze orange for winter hunter in the northern states? It's by far the warmest winter hat in temperatures around 15 degrees and colder. The mandatory requirement for hunters to wear orange would make it a most profitable venture since there is no orange winter hat that I have found that is its equal. I wear the black hat with an orange stocking cap over it.
