Mother-Daughter
Ironworkers,
Carolina and Kat
Carolina decided to become an ironworker after seeing the Space Needle nearly 25 years ago. She was a single mom, new to Seattle and looking for a line of work with good pay and benefits. Most of the “female jobs” she applied for, like typist or medical translator, paid little with zero benefits. The trades on the other hand, offered exactly what she was looking for.
The beginning of Carolina’s ironworking career was full of challenges. She was often the only woman on site and had to work twice as hard to prove herself. With such a hardworking example, Carolina’s daughter Kat also became an ironworker. In fact, she’s in the same local chapter as her mom.
I walked tall and fearless, to make it another day and provide for my daughter. I gave no one permission to break me or make me feellike I did not belong.

Wind turbine technician Jessica Kilroy is no stranger to the hot seat. Her job requires advanced rock-climbing and rope-rigging skills. When she’s in harsh locations, like the deserts of Joshua Tree, she needs gear she can depend on.
“Technicians work in high wind speeds on turbine towers that are between 262 and 328 feet tall. First we climb a ladder inside inside the tower and anchor our ropes. Then we rappel off the nose cone and secure ourselves to the blunt side of the wind turbine blade.” - Jessica Kilroy
