Easy to wear, practical jacket that gets compliments
I'm going to go into way to much detail here because I am a Canadian shopper and when we order items from the States, returning them or exchanging them is far too costly so we must order wisely. I did a ton of research to order the correct size because I had a lot of difficulty finding anything Carhartt women to try on for sizing. So here it goes:
I am 5'6.5". Im in my mid 40's , am fit. I weigh a lean and muscular 155 lbs. I have broad shoulders (18") and a wide muscular upper back and my chest measures 38" (34DD). My widest "hip" measurement is 39". That is measured half way up my rear as I have a muscular rear and don't carry any weight on my lower hips and thighs. My arm length is 19.5". I am an x-gymnast and sprinter/jumper and my body shape still reflects that.
As far as I know, this review could also apply to jacket model: WJ130. There wasn't any in my size in Carhartt Brown so I ordered this one. I am actually happy I had no choice because I really really like the colour of the liner in this one.
I ordered a size Medium and I am very pleased with the fit. This jacket's measurements while lying flat are Shoulders: 18.5" , Chest: 23 1/4" , Sleeve: 25", bottom width measured just above the stretch band: 21.5".
I am sure I could have gotten away with a small if I wanted it to fit more closely in the body but I wanted a roomier Fit. I don't wear the jacket like the model does. I put the bottom band around my high hip and fold the rest over to make it more like a bomber jacket fit, i don't like the feel of things stretched across my rear and it looks great that way.
My fit issues in women's clothing are always this: Its almost always too narrow across my shoulders and the armholes are almost always smaller than I like which causes the top to be a very close fit around my armpits. I was specifically looking for a jacket that was functional for me in our west coast "winters" that didn't have this issue. I sweat just thinking about moving, so having a bunch of fabric in my armpit area is the worst. I tried on two women's full swing jackets and while I liked the mobility they provided in reaching forward and my shoulder blade area, they had a very close fit to my armpit. I understand why lots of women would really like this feature but its not a good one for me, so they weren't options. This jacket is not a close fit anywhere. The arm length is a very functional working arm length and would also be well suited to wearing gloves. When I say this I mean that the cuffs don't try to push down over my hands and would tuck in nicely to gloves or mitts. When I reach forward the cuff stays put and doesn't expose my wrists. If you want a jacket that you easily wear down over your hands then this isn't the one for you. Over all the fit is lose enough to layer and move and breath freely but not sloppy, it doesn't look like Im wearing a man's jacket.
Yes the zipper is lighter weight on this woman's version than the mens :( and yes its stiff at first (not an issue for me)
I did try on mens style J130 in small and found that the body was narrower than this Women's Medium (it fit more like the women's small in this style) but the shoulders/armpits and arm length was comparable to womens medium. I also tried on a few mens full swing styles in small and medium. What I found was that they fit well in the shoulders and armpits, the sleeve length was a bit longer but still functional but the hip area was narrow in proportion to the chest which on the smalls, of course, makes sense.
I will finish by saying this; Carhartt does work clothing for men very well and has earned it's reputation. I really like that you are doing women's versions of practical work wear. Please stick true (at least in basic items) to the work functionality and durability of your products for women. That doesn't mean you can't add fashion to your options but I hope your main focus at least on some essential basics is fit, function and durability.
