This can be used for situations when you need to protect your pants from dirt and need a few extra pockets. Unlike a gardener's vest, it won't add another layer, which keeps you cooler in hot weather. It would be even better if there were more secure places for long-handled, heavy and sharp tools and a quick-release buckle on the waist ties. A tie in the back or in front (if the straps are wrapped around waist) isn't that practical if I need to take it off when I'm covered in dust. Fabric is the same heavy poly/cotton as the short-alls and work pants.
