The jacket itself has enough going for it to warrant a decent review, but it's got more flaws than I expected. Firstly, the sleeves are larger than you'd expect. So much so that you tend to look a little ridiculous with your arms hanging by your sides as you appear to have comically sized biceps. The zipper is a cheap metal and you can actually feel the lack of quality; a huge difference from Carhartt's usual heavy duty zippers.
The material is stiff, but that's to be expected. It will rub your wrists uncomfortably. Furthermore, it's by no means a winter jacket. Blanket lining or not, it's thin and more suited towards a spring or fall jacket. The length is a huge issue. The pictures show that the jacket doesn't exactly hang low, but putting one on is a different story. If you wear a tool belt, this jacket is amazing. If you don't, be prepared to keep your hands in the awkwardly high pockets to keep it from riding up.
Overall, a bit of a let down. If Carhartt threw on an extra inch or two of length and actually put ANY insulation in the sleeves, it might be a nice jacket. As it stands, it seems more like the test versions of a jacket before it's perfected and sold. My opinion: unless you have your heart set on this jacket, choose another.
Bought this jacket in 2014 as the 125th anniversary edition to wear when I'm working with and around my livestock. Fit and finish are as expected with the Carhartt name. This jacket always receive compliments even after a year of hard use. Couldn't ask for a better product.
This is a perfect jacket for working outside during Fall and Spring seasons. This is not a winter jacket as it is a bit on the light side, unless you layer underneath. A comment was that the pockets were useless, however, this is a work jacket that allows lots of movement so it is cut a little on the short side which accommodates a tool belt very easily. I often work outside building shelves, re-finishing furniture, pick up leaves, etc... and this jacket allows you to move freely, consequently the pockets are set high up on the body (I hardly use them). Its a little on the stiff side (especially the collar) and it took 3-4 hot washes before the fabric became comfortable but since then, it is my go to jacket for working outside. The fabric is sturdy, resists tearing, and stops mild to moderate wind gusts very well.
I bought this jacket 2 years ago in the fall when I outgrew my Duck Active Jacket. I bought it in Carhartt brown and it looks great! I get compliments on it all the time because of it's timeless rugged looks. I usually wear this jacket from October to mid December, and then from mid Febuary to the end of March in northern Connecticut so it is plenty warm. I wash this jacket once a year so that I can show off all my hard work when I wear it.
All we can say is this is the nicest, most durable jacket out there. Obivoulsy, we are not the only ones who think so; my husbands last one was stolen out of his work truck. It was just about five years old and still going strong, so strong that I purchased this one to repalce it. Our son liked it so much we bought him the same one in gray for Christmas.
bought this for a christmas gift and was really satisfied it is exactly what was described and at a great price would reccomend and i have all ready two of my friends have bought from this site thanks again
I own a number of Carhartt coats, and every one is great. This one is no exception. It looks great, feels great and is tough as nails. I particularly like the chest pocket for my phone...it keeps me from having to dig around inside the coat when it's cold. Thanks, Carhartt.
I needed a new jacket to deal with the cold and wet San Francisco winter, but I wanted something that can be worn over my tool belt with suspenders. The Detroit series jacket is perfect for this. I went with the J97 over the J01 because a local retailer had my size in stock. The J97 is comfortable from the start with little need for break-in.
The jacket fits snugly enough to allow good movement and not let the material get in the way when working. The blanket lining is nice and warm when I wear a short-sleeve shirt with temperatures in the 40s. I think lower temperatures would be fine with a long-sleeve flannel and/or a thermal.
The best part about the jacket is that the base rests just on top of my tool belt and bags and does not ride up due to being too long. I wear framer bags with a belt tape measure holster on the right side, and the jacket doesn't get in the way of me quickly getting to the tape.
I only have two complaints: The inside face of the collar is made of the same canvas material as the body, and when I wore the collar down, it caused a rash on my neck for about four weeks until the cloth was well broken in (with three washes). I got around the irritation by wearing the collar up. When worn up, the collar does a good job of covering the neck area, and the zipper runs up tight to the neck. The other complaint is that the jacket is not waterproof, but I knew this when buying it. The material is thick enough to absorb a good amount of water before soaking through.
I cannot comment on the longtime durability due to not having worn the jacket for more than two months, but it is holding up well from being on me forty hours a week for two months working construction outside.
This is not a jacket for someone looking to wear it out on the town with an un-tucked t-shirt. The body is very short to fit over a tool belt, and an un-tucked t-shirt sticks out enough to look ridiculous in a non-job-site setting. I couldn't be happier with the jacket as a workman's jacket.
i Love the look to this jacket. it is relatively warm and good in the wind. my only complaint is that the sleeves seem a bit baggy and im not a scrawny guy. it may be because im a smaller guy with big shoulders that the fit is a little off but i love it and wear it everywhere. asking for another for christmas!
nice jacket, very durable materials used, very good quality, seams are sewn straight, heavy duty zipper that won't break, thick material used on outside of coat. I run heavy equipment, so i'm in the outdoors all day and carhartt products are what I strickly use to keep warm, carhartt products hold up better than any other brands I've tried.
My dad gave me this jacket over a year ago and it still looks as if it could have come from the store. The only difference is that this one is broken in. The jacket is incredibly warm even in the winter. The blanket lining is much warmer than you would think. The fit is great and the four pockets are really handy. This is a great product.
at 6ft. 7in. ihave a tuff time finding stuff that fits. great tall mans selection. it fit like a glove. same carhartt quality i have gotten used to over the years, just tossed the same coat that i bought back in the early eightys.
I've owned detroit jackets for years now and I have 4 different colors. They are too good looking to be used hard until they get a little worn - Ha! They are light enough to be used year round and with a flannel or wool shirt are great for all but very cold days. I like the old collars though they were color coordinated and made the jacket even sharper. Great jacket never the less. Thanks Carhartt!
I had wanted a Carhartt jacket for a while now but never got around to getting one...until just after Christmas.
Armed with gift cards I descended on the local Carhartt retailer with no particular jacket in mind until I saw the J97.
We burn wood and coal. I've needed a jacket for a while now that would be light weight, warm, durable, have wind breaking capabilities, and have good range of motion, to give me mobility. I need to lug, split and stack wood, and carry 50 lb.bags of coal on my shoulders without having a jacket fall apart, get ripped, or become irretrievably soiled.
The J97 does the job for me. When it gets soiled I simply throw it in the wash, and it cleans up great. In fact I wear this jacket when I'm out and about. My wife has commented that she likes the way it looks on me.
The only comment I have that would be considered remotely critical is actually more of an observation. When these jackets are new they are STIFF. They break in quickly but they need to washed a couple of times before they "loosen up".
Because of it's obvious durability and construction I'm looking forward to having this jacket for years of use. In fact I just purchased my second Carhartt jacket (J140) and I expect the same thing from it.
Love this jacket, but would also buy the coat in moss green, carhartt need to break out the moss dye, and start making them, as sold out as they are they would make some bucks, by the way, give me a e-mail when you do! I take a large regular, get the hint CARHARTT!!!!!
I absolutley love these coats. I have 2 of them, one for work and the other for a good coat. I have had my work coat for 2-3 years and it's still in good shape. They are really heavy and thick coats and keep you warm on the really cold days.
I received one for a gift several years ago, & it is the sturdiest outdoor jacket I own. I've used it while chopping down trees & clearing away the debri & it didn't even affect this garment. I carried away logs without damaging the sleeves, & I believe the canvas material definitely protects the arms/body from the sharp branches. When I was done, I just brushed it off. I think the coat was machined washed once or twice..still fits well!
I bought this jacket bak in 2008. I apsolutley love it. I dont own anything but my two carhartts. I like this one cause I have the ability to do anything I want in it and I know it will hold up. Warm and comfortable too. Carhartt is mostly all I wear from head to toe. Im an electrician so its great for those rough jobs and gives me flexibilty even with my tool belt on. I will be buying another one when its time. Thanks carhartt
I just took delivery on my first Carhartt jacket. When I took it out of the package and put it on I felt like I had owned it for a long, long time; it fit so well and felt so comfortable. I am very pleased with the quality of the materials and workmanship of this jacket. The duck is very heavy and there's a warm blanket lining. It keeps me warm without getting too hot. The zippers are nice an heavy so I'm sure they will last a long time. I also love the look of the jacket. It is casual but I will certainly wear it everywhere.
This jacket is a very nice looking jacket, I use mine for going out. Fit is fantastic and comfort is great. I like the jackets that ride right at the waistline. This is a great jacket for chilly days, not really good for very cold weather. My complaint is the zipper is flimsy and hard to open at times. The sleeves are a bit long, I wear mine rolled up. But this is my second favorite jacket I own, I plan on buying more of this same jacket in other colors.
Purchased this jacket to wear to and from work, that was a mistake. I wear it everywhere, taking the kids to school, running errands, standing on the lacrosse sidelines, camping, ect. What a nice coat just the right amount of insulation to keep the cold out without overheating you as the sun drops and the night settles in.

I've had my brown, blanket lined Detroit Jacket going on three years. I love it!! It's comfortable and stylish to wear out on the town and to work. I wear it to work, but at work, I don't want to get it dirty!!
I have never owned Carhartt until this fall and have since gotten a little Carhartt "drunk". The Detroit jacket is my third Carhartt and it is just perfect. The fit is trim and looks great. Just thick enought to chase away the chill. You can work in it or wear it on a night out, it is at home either place.
This is a great, well constructed, and tough mid-weight jacket. The blanket lining is comfortable and insulation level is perfect for autumn and spring. I especially like the short, waist length. It doesn't get in the way when getting in and out of a vehicle or when horseback riding. I only gave it 2 stars on appearance because I ordered the cotton wood color and it isn't as shown in the picture. While the body color is accurate from the picture, the collar and zipper on the chest pocket are not black, which is misleading. When it arrived, I noticed the collar and pocket zipper are only slightly darker than the body with no sharp contrast. It maybe a small point but in my opinion, it doesn't look as good without the accent which is shown on the website. On a practical note, collar stains will stand out more.
