Extremes®. For most of the rugged corners of the planet.
Worn in the Arctic seas, Extremes® is our toughest, warmest, most durable outerwear line. It battles snow and rain, calms the wind and the winter gusts. It does everything but steer the ship back to port.
This is a great compliment to the Paxton Hooded ZIP Mock Pullover. Sometimes I need a Neck Gaiter on the cold South Dakota plains, but that's to keep even more snow out. Combo this C55 with a DECENT base layer and the Paxton & you will be burning up.
purchased in 2000,have worn it as my daily winter coat since, wears excellent was mistaken as new by a co-worker last year:-) worn it to snow blow many a dark morning, walking in the cold blowing wind always warm, sleet and freezing rain practically bead off it.Great product!
Don't know how I made it 61 years Without One!!!! OK, so I spent my Career in an Office, But Spending a Lot of Time Outdoors since Retirement <-- Will be Spending a Lot More Time Outside Now!!!! Thanks!
The Carhartt Arctic outwear is the only thing that allows me to be warm during the harsh Great lakes winters while working in freezing temperatures and water spraying and freezing to the coat. I have had these coats covered in ice and or soaking wet on the outside while I stayed warm on the inside. I layer with tight knit polyester as a base layer then the Carhartt Arctic as an outer layer and I can handle any weather down to -30 degrees with wind. These coats also last over 8 years before repetitive working conditions finally wear through the heavy outer fabric and I still remain warm even with holes in the outer layers of the sleeves. The holes are from my abuse to the clothing not a manufacturing defect. These coats are bomb proof and a must for anyone facing cold harsh winters. I'm also a native Floridian meaning that I get cold when the weather drops below 70 degrees and this clothing allows me so survive the winters in warmth. Just dress with good thermals and and get the Arctic bibs to cover your lower half so you stay warm when it drops below 20 degrees.
Overall, this is a very nice coat. The quality is excellent (as it is with most Carhartt products), and it is indeed somewhat water-resistant. I bought one last year, and purchased a second one - which should tell you what a nice product I think this is.
The only complaint I have about this coat is with the zipper: the zipper is quite large and robust (as you'd expect it to be on a rugged coat like this), yet the zipper handle is a bit small and, moreover, its attachment to the zipper is strikingly thin. I am concerned that this will break with time, especially since it takes a reasonable amount of force to open and close the zipper.
The one other comment I'd make about this coat is that the ballistic lining by nature isnt very warm. Wear this jacket by itself in the freezing cold and you'll feel much of the cold. Wear a sweatshirt or sweater underneath it and this coat will keep you remarkably warm. For any jacket to be warm, it should have a lining that traps air against your body, such as fleece. Ballistic lining is durable and easy to put on over other layers of clothing, but doesn't do much to trap air. It needs one more layer of cloth beneath it to keep you warm. It is also worth noting that the cordura outer is a rather stiff material - much more so when the jacket is new - that does soften up a bit with time.
Otherwise, this is probably the nicest coat I've ever owned.
I work in the oil and gas industry which takes me all over the world, i purchased this jacket and the acrtic bibs to go with them in light of a hitch in North Dakota through January. With the temps reaching -20 farenheit I never found a time when i wasn't warm and comfortable. I would recommend this gear to anyone who is going to be working or just spending anytime outside in extreme cold conditions.
I have the tall version of this coat and it fits perfectly. The inside is very comfortable and smooth. the exterior holds up perfectly in rain, sleet, and snow while doing pretty much any type of work. I've done everything from simply wearing it to the office to chopping firewood in it during 10-30 degree temps and all sorts of conditions. It's held up outstanding...in some cases, nearly overheated me! the warmth is almost instant as soon as you put it on. As with any thick lined coat, the jacket is a tiny bit stiff, but by no means uncomfortable. Just don't expect it to be as broken in as a lighter weight jacket.
I've had my Carhartt Extreme for years... My coat has been the greatest tool of my trade since day one. I will never buy another coat unless its an Extreme. I work on the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay, AK and up there you need grade A gear and not "knock-off" stuff you buy at Walmart... These jackets are the real deal. If I can stay warm at temperatures reaching well below -60 during 10-12 hour days outside, I'll assure you it'll keep you warm anywhere. It's great when it comes to cold, wet environments.
I waited three weeks after I got my Carhartt arctic quilted lined jacket and hood to write this review because I really put it to some tests. I work nightshift as a mechanic for a regional railroad company so I’m outdoors in all kinds of weather. When I got the jacket I was kind of skeptic because it is thin and fairly light weight. On a 3 degree snowy windy night this jacket kept me so warm with just a long sleeve shirt underneath. It protects against the biting wind too. The jacket is really well designed. The zippers are easy to use with gloves on. It’s also easy to put things in the pockets with gloves on. Just real well designed. The optional hood is great too. With the hood up and the Velcro flap fastened it seals up around your face so cold air or snow cant get in. The jackets material is very durable and water resistant. Defiantly won’t tear easily. All and all it’s a super work jacket!
I bought this style jacket with hood about 20? years ago from a store that carried a great line of Carhartt wear in Newland NC. Winters can be cold, snowy and damp in the Appalachians, I would take this jacket to Pluto. Awesome construction with a heavy duty zipper. I've 'grown' since then and plan to find a larger size of the same jacket, even with years of woods work and many memorable winter seasons it still looks great with no frays, tears or breaks. Thanks! Carhartt.
I was looking for something to get me through the brutal winters in Michigan, and I had been advised to look at the "Extremes" line which includes the "Arctic" lining. The coat literally seals you in from the elements, and no matter how hard the wind blows, you won't feel it.
I'll be buying the hood for it, as my previous Carhartt had one, and you cannot beat the convenience of the high quality hoods.
The coat features cuffs that are recessed from an outer protective cordura layer that provides extra protection up to where your hand begins to come out. If used with proper gloves, this almost guarauntees that your hands will stay warm and free of moisture.
I got this jacket in the winter of 2002 when i was living in Philadelphia. This jacket is the best. You can wear it with just a t-shirt and long sleeve shirt, and stay comfortably warm. The two inside pockets are great for a large bi-fold wallet on one side, and mail, tri-folded papers, and pens on the other. The large outer pockets are bottomless (9"wide by 12" tall with a cutout opening, with no closure- but i've never had anything fall out) you can fit a folded in half sheet of paper, gloves, earmuffs or knit hat and anything else you can think of. Even though the outer pockets aren't insulated, they can block the wind on a cold day and still keep your bare hands warm. The other day i lost my car keys in there with my gloves and other stuff, and didnt even hear them jingling around. There are 2 smaller outer pockets (5"x5") on top of the larger ones good for small pieces of paper or an ID and credit card. Carhartt's level of care is unbeatable. Four years after owning it i had a problem with the zipper. I emailed Carhartt, they emailed me a postage paid UPS label, and I dropped it off at a local ship center. They replaced the zipper and shipped it back to me within 7 business days. Nine years later and still going strong. The cordoroy collar has faded a little with my washings, but the cordura hasn't faded any.(cold wash and hang dry). My only regret is not researching further and buying a tall size (the store where purchased only carried regular sizes). At 6'3", 180 lbs, the Large size I purchased would be better in Tall with a little extra length in the sleeves.
After more than ten years this coat is still in pretty good condition it keeps me warm with just a tee-shirt underneath and I am by no means a polar bear. I used to work in a factory now I am a teacher and I wear this coat with a shirt and tie no problem! I am buying a new one because I can't imagine using any other coat and the old one is getting too beat up for work (small stuff - broken zipper, Velcro loose) more cosmetic than functional. I love all the pockets (6 in all) the two front ones are huge, keep your hands warm and won't let you loose the things that you put in them. A word to the wise GET THE OPTIONAL HOOD its an extra 30 bucks but well worth it.
This the warmest toughest coat i've ever seen let alone owned. When I bought this coat the guy at the store asked what size I wanted, I said I want it big enough to layer under, he said you're not going to need to layer under this, I laughed and said yeah right. Then once it was delivered i fryed in it, in a good way, it's also water resistant which is great for snow because duck just soaks on through. It's of made cordura nylon which is one of the reasons a bought it instead of duck. I'm a fireman and the sides of our duty boots are made out of codura nylon, so i knew what I was getting. Cordura nylon is water resistant, cut and tear resistant. Fits true to size order what you normally wear it'll fit fine even if you do decide to layer. Now go buy it and start being warm.
Got this jacket and bibs as a gift for christmas. Totaly satisfied!!!!! Is durable ,rugged oh and EXTREMELY HOT!!!!!
I work outside all day long in the Canadian winter and i usually have 12-14 hours day in the minus -20 celcius it isand never ever was i cold . need a durable gear for hard work this is the ONE . I'm thinking of getting another one to keep clean and to wear as a casual jacket since it looks so great.!!!!!
Once again Carhartt did not disappoint. The extreme Artic Coat is warm, comfortable and rugged. Amazingly it is also lightweight! I am very pleased with my purchase and have told several friends. In my opinion carhartt set the standard for high quality, rugged work clothes. This winter coat is everything I was looking for and more. Thanks Carhartt.
It can not be put into words how great this product is. Having served in the military, I have been exposed to temperatures of extreme heat and cold. Looking back, On those cold desert nights I wish i would have had the luxury of having this coat. What i do have is Michigan's Lovely winter wonderland. It's unimaginable how warm it is inside of this coat. In the blistering cold you can stand in the coldest of wind and you still feel nice and toasty where ever the coat covers. Be sure to also get the hood and a Carhartt hat to complete your package, cause even tho your body is warm, you dont want to ruin your experience by freezing your face off!
I'm always cold. I've never owned a coat that was warm enough that I would leave the house in winter when it wasn't mandatory. I bought this coat a couple years ago, and I now go walking with my husband, even in the coldest weather. It's strange feeling the bitter cold on my legs and face, and almost sweating under my coat. It's durable, has plenty of large pockets- my ereader fits in one just fine! I got the optional hood, too. I tell everyone I can, if they want to be warm in winter, they NEED this coat!
This was my first Carhartt jacket and definitely not the last. I was amazed at how comfortable and warm it was. I live in NY so the weather right now is snowy and below freezing. This jacket handles those conditions very well if not perfect.
The fit was perfect, Being 6"7 its hard to find a nice jacket that fits. But I had no trouble at all finding a Carhartt jacket that was my size (4XLT).
The quality and durability of this coat alone makes it worth buying. As long as they don't get rid of the Big & Tall line then I will keep buying Carhartt jackets for the foreseeable future.
I bought this coat in august and even though its getting cold up here it's still to warm to wear this coat. It will be definitely be tested when it drops to -50. The hood is also a nice addition to the coat. It takes a while to break in but is still nice.
I purchased this coat and the detachable hood for my husband for Christmas. He is so happy! He needed some good winter work/fishing clothes, and he could not be more pleased...and he looks great in them! Very well made like all Carhartt products!
I got this coat in 1998 when i was in the 10th grade and wore it every winter up until this year. The only reason i stopped wearing it is because i can't find it. The only thing wrong with it after all those years were a few burn holes from wearing it while welding.I will def be buying another next winter and suggest anyone who wants to buy a longlasting coat do the same
My husband owns this coat, and I'm always guilty of stealing it! This is by far the absolute WARMEST coat I have ever worn!!! It's been getting cold in MI and every time I walk out of the house wearing this coat my body never feels cold!! Great coat, but they don't make them for women! So men buy two, one for you, one for your wife!
The coat is much warmer than I expected. It may take a while to break it in completely but that is because it is built for rugged wear. The coat is heavy enough to protect me from the elements yet it is comfortable enough to wear all day working outdoors. I am sure it is the best work coat I ever owned.
I bought this coat at the end of the summer this year and can feel the quality and durability. The colors offered were new and stylish. I am glad I am prepared for this winter and know that I will be able to perform my job in any weather. All I have to do now is find a hood.
after wearing out my traditional duck coat i bought this one rather than another duck and this one seams lighter but is just as warm or better. only complaint is i d't like the velcro inside pocket, so i removed the velcro. i would like them to both be zipper, but its only a small flaw
After four years of wearing this coat and working line maintenance for an Airline; I love this coat. Only a worn corduroy collar around the neck line. The Cordura fabric still looks good, and has survived four years tear free.
the extremes bibs and coat are the ice fishing gear that you will find out there much better then any coat and bib set you can find on the market today.im retired so i get time to do alot of ice fishing let me tell you i hear guys all day boo hooin it on the ice and here i am takin my coat off cause im so warm hahahaha good goin carharrt we got it right this time im sure you could take any coldy to the south pole or north pole and be just as warm as if they were in ca or fla.good stuff and thanks for a chance to hear about this product dont pass it up you wont be disappointed but dont take it from me buy some for urself and see what all the hype is about, and youll be laughin at all ur friends when they are whinin.
I bought this same coat a few years back i can honestly say you can not destroy this coat. I'm a linemen I'm always working in the cold and this coat has done more than it's job. I've been snagged on things and it wouldn't rip I've been cut up on poles and it didn't rip. Most importantly it's warm never owned a better coat I give it 100%.
I've had this coat, along with the hood, for 6+ years. It has been put through some pretty bad scenarios and is still in pristine condition. I am a woman working in an extreme male dominated field. I was instructed years ago to go buy the warmest and best stuff I could find and they emphasized that Carhartt should be looked at. With this coat and hood, I have had men I work with threaten to steal it. It is impossible to get cold in this sucker. I've been outside in snow, sleet, rain and cold New England days. I even brought it to Canada and didn't get cold. I love this coat.
I have to admit I am jealous as Carhartt employees Have an easy job selling a product that sells itself,I Have a second coat that fits great, warm in the 10° Freezer and the attached hood is also a great fit And warm . I was.ooking at the jeans jacket, that is going to be my next purchase. The order time to receiving the coat was great only one day. People at carheartt are friendly, answer all my questions. I am buying a great product and recommend it to my family and friends.
I bought this coat 13 months ago, so I'm on my second winter with it. The coat runs a bit large, but acceptable. Anything smaller, could be too small. Pockets are plentiful for my needs. It isn't, however, what I would consider to be warm. A short 20 minute walk in 20 degree weather, can be too long with a brisk wind. The insulation layer is really quite thin. Wind blows right through it. It has been a real disappointment! Not at all what I expected.
The coat keeps me warm, the fabric can take abuse, the pockets are large and the hood keeps me warm. The Velcro of the hood simplifies securing the hood for warmth. I spend a lot of time out in the cold. I bought the coat in New York 1/2/2008. I hope Carhartt has improved it. Last year, 2009 the cord that goes around the waste to keep the cold out, tore apart. My work around was to thread a new nylon cord into the cord passage. I realized the hard nylon could damage the fabric so I used the plastic locking mechanisms on the cord to hold the waist in a tight position. I wish i had thought to do that in the first place. Today 12/11/2010 the puller on the zip came off. I was able to replace it with a heavy duty paper clip which I bound in tape. I hope there are no more surprises. I still like the product because the outer fabric is so very durable. I don't expect I could find better even at a much higher price.
Overall this coat is excellent. Great fit, durable, good looking. But NOT warm enough for northern Canadian winters. I have to wear another jacket underneath just to stay slightly warm, and the cold hasn't even hit yet. Its only -25c here and I'm cold. I guess i will have to look for a winter work coat somewhere else. Great coat if the temps stay above freezing. Maybe a name change would help buyers... call it" kind of extreme sub arctic fall coat."
WHAT'S , WITH THIS BLACK, DARK AND DINGY? MOST OF US ARE NOT FARMERS ANYMORE. ONE CAN DYE OR COAT CANVAS WITH ANY COLOR IN THE RAINBOW. BLACK IS A BAD CHOICE FOR ARCTIC GEAR BECAUSE, WHEN IT'S WINTER IN THE ARCTIC IT'S DARK NEARLY ALL THE TIME. AND BLACK IN SNOW CAN BE TAKEN FOR ROCKS OR TREES. IT TENDS TO BE CONSIDERABLY DARKER IN THE REST OF NORTH AMERICA TOO. SO IF ONE ISN'T OPERATING IN STEALTH MODE, IT'S GENERALLY A VERY GOOD IDEA TO BE VERY VISABLE. ESP. IN OUTSIDE WORK SUCH AS CONSTRUCTION, SNOW SHOVELING, FISHING HUNTING, CROSS WALK ATTENDENT, GROUNDS KEEPING, ANIMAL TENDING, FURIERS, COURIER, ETC. ALSO, WINTER TENDS TO BE DREARY ANYWAY, AND THE FURTHER NORTH, THE LONGER THE WINTER, SO DARK AND DRAB IS DOWN RIGHT DEPRESSING. LAST BUT NOT LEAST AT ALL IS WOMEN WORK OUTSIDE TOO, TEND ANIMALS CHILDREN WALK TO WORK OR BUS STOPS, DARK IS GOOD FOR MECHANICS AND MEN MAYBE BUT THE OTHER HALF OF THE WORLD WANTS OPTIONS. CHEERFUL AND NOTICABLE OPTIONS. CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'D IGNORE WE WOMEN. (WE HAVE MORE CURVES TOO BUT WELL DO THE SAME COAT AS A MAN TO STAY WARM AND HAVE DURABLE CLOTHING. FOR WOMEN USE SLIGHTLY THINNER CANVAS AND COAT IT WITH SOMETHING THATS MASSIVELY EASY TO CLEAN. WOMEN WHO DO HARD WORK NEED ALL THE BREAKS THEY CAN GET)
Yes this jacket is very windproof, yes this jacket is very water repellent, yes the durability of this jacket is excellent, yes this jacket is very warm. I love this jacket, I love the fact that it has a dual zipper. you can zip it from the bottom up and also there's a second zipper so you can pull up from the bottom and open it up so it makes it a lot more comfortable to wear the jacket while sitting at the same time. It's not winter yet but I have worn it outside when I've considered it cold and it's kept me very warm, I really bought it for ice fishing, if I have any complaints I will update my review.
I purchased a carhartt C55 jacket and am very impressed with the overall quality and and choice of materials used in the coat, but it is far from the warmest jacket I have ever owned and could not recommend this product to friends and family for one reason, the jacket only zips up to my neck line leaving my neck exposed to the elements making the jacket not as worm as jackets that I have had that have zipped past my neck line to my chin. Overall after owning and wearing the jacket for a couple of weeks I find it inadequate for a winter in northern Ohio and can only assume one would freeze to death if they wore it to the Arctic as the name of the jacket suggests.
